Written by John Benjamin Martin originally for Lifetime in 2007, Devil's Diary will be available on DVD August 24, 2010. Not only does this make for a decent scary movie, it does have some decent lessons built into the plot.
How many of you wish you make what you write onto the page a reality?
Well, be careful what wish for because it just might come true!
So what?
Well, remember nothing ever comes free. Cinderella had a midnight curfew and even the The Charmed Ones needed to watch out for personal gain. But sometimes, the cost is more than you realize. Ursala Wilson of Devil's Diary can attest to that.
Just like Gandalf and Galadriel who would want to use The One Ring for good, it would possess and defile them and eventually, they would do evil's work. Well, that's what would happen to you, if you could make anything you wrote down happen. You might be thinking, "I'm not that kind of person!"
Well, ask yourself what would happen if someone said something to upset or anger you? What would you do then? Would you be able to just ignore it? What about that bully picking on you, your siblings or your kids? How would you handle them?
It would start small. Maybe you do something like "rewrite" a person to be nicer to you, but how honest is that? If you think that sounds acceptable, let me say Stepford Wives. Yes, very creepy that women were replaced with robots, but if you rewrite everyone to be "nice" all the time, everyone would seem like robots and life would get terribly boring.
But not just boring, how long before you begin to think you can make anyone bend to your will with just the written word? Not just because it makes sense or that you enjoy it, but because you can? How long before the power goes to your head?
If you're still confident nothing bad would happen, what about if the power didn't work for just you? What if the power was in one specific pen or book? Would you be willing to give it to anyone who needs the help or would you react like Gollum and do whatever was necessary to keep it? Even Frodo began to be infected after awhile.
